Fall Break

So, its the end of the week before fall break and I am ready to go home. I'd be there already, except that I have one class tomorrow that I absolutely can't miss, after having no classes today. I won't actually be in Dubuque until Sunday though because I'm spending the weekend in Iowa City and going to the Iowa-Wisconsin game on Saturday. Anyone who's in Dubuque reading this and wants to hang out next week, drop me an email or hit up my cell. Also, I will be at Senior on Thursday if I've got any RAMS reading the blog.

The Jes Week in Review: Oct. 12

Hey all, time for another edition of The Jes Week in Review.

1. Lumberjacks and Lumberjills: This Friday O'Neill hosted its fall dorm dance with the aforementioned theme. Everyone showed up in their finest flannel and danced the night away. Pancakes were provided and a great time was had by all.
2. Late Night Reckers: I worked a "late night" at Reckers last night which left me completely exhausted at the late late hour of 11 PM. Fortunately (or unfortunately) with much of the campus reeling from the football loss a few hours earlier, everyone else was feeling pretty much the same as me and a large number of us spent the night sequestered in the dorm.
   
3. Fire Alarm: Much later than my supposed "late night" work shift a fire alarm went off somewhere in the 1:30 AM range last night. I was still awake at the time, but that doesn't make rushing out of the dorm in the wee hours of the morning any more fun.

There you have it, essentially a weekend wrap-up for this week's wrap-up. Next week's wrap-up will be written from Dubuque as I return home for fall break this coming Friday. Look for updates on my trip to Iowa City to see a swim meet and a football game in next weekend's wrap-up.

King Jordan?

Congratulations go out today to my brother Jordan on being named one of two kings for Dubuque Senior High's homecoming this weekend. Evidently this is the first time in 32 years that there has been a tie for homecoming king, and leave it to Jordan to be the weird one. Good luck to the RAMS at the game tonight and here's hoping that everyone has a safe and fun time at the dance tomorrow night.

Obama Wins!

The Notre Dame Mock Election went Obama today. In fact, it went strongly to Obama, 52.6% Obama to 41.1% McCain. In the mean time, the debate continues on TV as I write this with a lot of repetition of key phrases from both sides and a thoroughly confusing town hall format.

A recap of my day today:
9:30-10:30 AM: Led class discussion in "Food Fights" on current debates in organic agriculture.
12:20-1:20 PM: Swam.
6:30-7:30 PM: Weekly NZ dinner.
9:00-10:30 PM: Watched debate and Mock Election returns.

Now I'm getting ready to go to my Hall Government meeting. Tuesdays are pretty slow for The Jes.

Update: O'Neill, in both the hall wide and campus wide elections went slightly McCain. Of course, we do have a picture of W. in the main lobby of the hall. I smell subliminal messaging.

I'm Sorry, What?

I was reading The Observer, the student news paper on campus (or at least the only one worth reading) and I noticed an interesting headline. It read "Students call debate a tie" in reference to the vice presidential debate, so I naturally had to read on. Toward the end of the article I stumbled on this quote from the Notre Dame Debate Club:

However, they said that overall Biden had stronger rebuttals and that Biden played Palin's inexperience to his advantage.
Overall, the four indicated that Palin was the victor because all she neede to do to win was "stay in there".

Im sorry, but on what planet does the person who has stronger rebuttal and uses the other person's weaknesses to their advantage the loser? I concede that Gov. Palin performed much better than I would have expected, granted she didn't answer any of the questions that were asked, which had to make things easier. Still, you can't win by simply staying in there. Is the underdog in a swimming or track race awarded the gold for fourth place simply because he was expected to finish last and he managed to "stay in there"? No, of course not, we would all consider that ludicris. In much the same way, Gov. Palin cannot win a debate in which she was clearly the weaker debator simply because she was expected to run off the stage crying at some point, but maybe thats just me.

The Jes Week in Review: Oct. 5

This is a new feature I'm going to start trying out. I'm going to wrap up the week with three major events that I may or may not have already posted earlier in the week.

1. I bought a new TV Friday and picked it up today. 26" LCD HDTV by LG, its awesome. I'm going to get my HD service sometime this week. Iguess I'm really moving up in the world.
2. Sports in general have not been kind to me this past week with the exception of ND. The Cubs, the Hawkeyes, the Packers, its been rough, but there's always next week.
3. This week my Lit Prof. decided to split our class into groups by major and have us prepare discussion questions based on those majors. We had our first small group meeting tonight.

There you go, I think this week all of the news from today was more or less new news. I hope everyone has a great week.

Football v. Stanford

Today was our last home football game for a while, and we went out with a win. Even though it wasn't a pretty win, a win is a win. It was deceptively warm in the stadium because of the bright sun and the lack of win, but its actually pretty brisk still. Two time national championship winning Irish coach Ara Parseghian was on hand for the coin toss as part of the season long effort to recognize all of Notre Dame's national championship winning coaches. It seems to also be doing an excellent job of motivating the team, keeping us undefeated at home (4-1 overall). Aside from that, pretty standard weekend for me; studying and resting.

It got cold

Holy cow, it got cold here today. Both cold and rainy, in fact. The email went out last night and it is posted on the site, which is completely updated now.
